Platform Manager – Wasatch Magazine


Student Media at the University of Utah seeks a student to become the Platform Manager of Wasatch Magazine – the student published outdoor magazine of the university. This position is responsible to help manage and oversee the business and development of the magazine to ensure its success. 

This position will help oversee the following aspects of Wasatch: vision and direction of the magazine, content development and publishing, audience growth and engagement, magazine growth and development.

The Platform Manager reports to the jointly to the department Director and the Editor in Chief of the magazine.

Commitment: 12-15 hours per week

Wage: $10-12/hr depending on experience and performance, reviewed semesterly

Responsibilities specific to this position are in bold:

  • Vision and direction of the magazine.
    • Provide input on setting goals and participate in regular review of progress towards reaching goals and improving the magazine.
    • Provide input in regards to the overall theme and artistic quality of the magazine.
  • Content development and publishing
    • Coordinate and oversee the mechanics of publishing.
      • Coordinate with the printer on all print editions.
      • Understand and manage the website design and functionality.
      • Access and use digital analytics and provide regular reports to magazine leadership and team members.
      • Research and coordinate all social media efforts, including training team members in how to effectively use personal social media to promote the magazine.
      • Oversee print edition distribution:
        • Maintain all campus distribution points.
        • Develop and maintain off-campus distribution points.
          • Manage all relationships with business owners of these distribution points to leverage relationships to benefit both the business and the magazine.
        • Develop and maintain magazine subscription lists and processes.
  • Audience growth and engagement.
    • Manage all marketing opportunities for the magazine through social media, events, advertising, and other marketing opportunities on campus.
  • Magazine growth and development.
    • Coordinate with the advertising team to develop and pursue advertising opportunities.
    • Identify and research new content opportunities and publishing methods and assist in training staff to develop content for those opportunities, i.e., video, audio, etc.
  • Become familiar with the best practices of other schools’ media programs and use that knowledge and experience to help improve the magazine.


  • Previous experience and/or education and training in business or product management.
  • Must be an outdoors enthusiast.
  • An interest in or experience with journalism/news/media is preferred.
  • Willingness to familiarize self with the platform, platform leadership, and the content of the platform. Preference given to applicants with prior experience in the platform.
  • Experience in working with or managing others and in leading a team.
  • Computer proficiency and ability/willingness to learn new programs and software.
  • Experience or knowledge of marketing, brand management, audience growth and engagement. If applicant does not have this type of experience, a willingness to study and learn is required.
  • Must be enrolled student progressing satisfactorily towards a degree.
  • Major or minor in business, strategic communication, management, marketing, or similar preferred.
