What are the EPICS?
The EPICS are designed to recognize excellence in Student Media. There are two classes of awards given – first, the Grand EPICS, which celebrate the very best of our content and our students across all of Student Media. Second are platform specific EPICS, where students enter their best work to compete against the best work of their peers.

Best Collaboration
- With seven different media platforms, opportunities for collaboration abound in Student Media. This category is intended to celebrate the best work created by students working together from multiple platforms.
- The Grand EPIC for Best Collaboration will be selected from content which involved multiple platforms of Student Media. Entries must involve contributors from at least two different platforms acting in their respective specialties.
- The winner will be the piece that utilized the features of the platforms and the skill sets of its contributors to the greatest quality.
Best Visual Art
- Photographs, graphic design, layout, cinematography–all play a large role in storytelling. This category is intended to recognize the best visual storytelling work from across Student Media.
- The Grand EPIC for Best Visual Art will be selected from the visual creations of Student Media. This includes, but is not limited to, photos, videos, graphics, and advertising.
- The winner will be the piece that demonstrates the most skill and beauty with visual art, regardless of the content or story of the piece or any other part (audio, etc.).
Best Video Content
- When writing, cinematography, audio, editing, and story come together well, video storytelling becomes a powerful method of communication. But all these different components must work in order for the video to be successful. This category is intended to recognize the best video storytelling from across Student Media.
- The Grand EPIC for Best Video Content will be selected from all video creations of Student Media, regardless of which department created them.
- The winner will be the piece that uses the medium of video to its greatest potential, either to tell a story, evoke emotion or a call to action, or entertain an audience.
Best Story
- As the campus storytellers, we strive to identify compelling, powerful stories and then tell them as best we can. This category is intended to celebrate the stories told by Student Media in the last year – whether it’s a story told by our student journalists or one told about a client or original stories from our talented team of contributors.
- While similar to the Grand EPIC categories below, the Best Story is not tied to a specific form of storytelling. Rather, judges will look for the compelling nature of the story and how well the medium chosen was used to tell that story. This is less about individual skill in writing, design, video or audio production, and more about the story itself.
- The Grand EPIC for Best Story will be selected from all Student Media storytelling projects. This includes, but is not limited to, written pieces, podcasts, videos, and other multimedia projects.
- The winner will be the piece that uses its medium to tell a complete story in a meaningful, compelling, and high-quality way.
Best Audio Content
- Audio content is often used to great effect in storytelling. A combination of the spoken word, music, and other sounds allows the storyteller to invoke emotion and understanding in the audience. This category is intended to celebrate the best audio storytelling from across Student Media.
- The Grand EPIC for Best Audio Content will be selected from all audio creations of Student Media, regardless of which department created them. Any audio can be considered, whether it is stand alone audio or audio in a video.
- The winner will be the piece that uses the medium of audio to its greatest potential, either to tell a story, evoke emotion or a call to action, or entertain an audience.
Best Written Content
- The power of the written word to effectively communicate is seemingly as old as time. For generations, skilled writers have been able to engage audiences in deep and meaningful ways, purely through the words they put onto paper or onto computer screens. This category recognizes the best written storytelling from across Student Media.
- The Grand EPIC for Best Written Content will be selected from all written creations of Student Media, regardless of which department created them. The winner will be the piece that uses written word to its greatest potential, either to tell a story, evoke emotion or a call to action, or entertain an audience.
Best Contributor
The Grand EPIC for Best Contributor will be selected from all Student Media Contributors and Interns. The winner will be the team member who is constantly producing quality content, following policy, and bringing excitement, cooperation, and innovation to their teams.
Best Leadership
The Grand EPIC for Best Leadership will be selected from all Student Media leadership. The winner will be the student leader who has demonstrated superior leadership skills, bringing their teams and their content together in a cohesive and high-quality manner.
